In 2004, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story entered our lives, combining the comedic talents of Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, along with many other comedians. This movie tracks the efforts of a misfit group and their attempt to save a small gym named Average Joe’s from being destroyed by the corporate giant, Globo Gym. In a last-ditch effort to scrape together the money needed, they decide to enter a dodgeball tournament that offers a prize of $50,000 for the winner, the exact amount needed to save their precious gymnasium.

Average Joe’s
This team is made up of the heroes of this silly tale. They are misfits, unlikely to win and not favored in the tournament. Yet, despite all odds and their very rough start, they are able to pull it off and win in the end! The staff and members of Average Joe’s Gym make up the players on this rather strange team – no wonder the odds for them winning was 50 to 1!
Purple Cobras
This team, sponsored and led by Globo Gym, was favored by everyone and breezed through the preliminary rounds of the competition. Here’s a fun fact for you: the Dodgeball DVD contains an alternate ending of the movie in which the Purple Cobras won and the Average Joe’s went home with nothing! Audiences didn’t respond well to this, so a new one was filmed in which the underdog won, defeating the evil corporate giant.

Girl Scout Troop #417
This is the first team Average Joe’s goes up against. They lose in spectacular fashion, but, in a shocking turn of events, the Troop is disqualified when it’s discovered that one of the players had steroids in their system. This technicality leads the Average Joe’s to the tournament in Las Vegas. It’s also the push the group needed to take their training seriously and accept an offer by Patches O’Houlihan, a legendary dodgeball champion, to be their coach.
The Cougars
This team is made up of skilled dodgeball players who managed to effectively eliminate everyone from the Average Joe’s team except for Gordon, a very mild-mannered man. At this pivotal point in the movie Patches, their unorthodox coach, tells him that he is so horrendous at dodgeball, the only way he will have any chance of winning is to get angry. After that less than inspiring pep talk, Gordon returns to the court to face 5 cougars in an intense showdown. Gordon takes Patches’ advice and ultimately emerges victorious, leading the Average Joe’s to the final round to face their archenemy: the Purple Cobras.
